As a player Madded started as both offensive and defensive tackle for the California Polytechnic College
at San Luis Obispo in 1957 and 1958. Madden was picked by the Eagles in the 21st round of the 1958 NFL
draft. Unfortunately a knee injury in his rookie year ended his playing carreer. He wore #77.
Madden began his NFL coaching carreer with Oakland in 1967. In 1968 he became head coach, making him
the youngest man (33) int the American Football League ever to hold the job. He guided the raiders to
seven Western Division titles and a victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI.
Before coaching at Oakland, Madden was defensive coordinator at San Diego State from 1964 to 1966, during
which time the Aztecs were ranked number one among small colleges and won 26 of 30 games.
